OSWEGO, NY (March 24, 2020) – Compass Federal Credit Union warns members to beware scammers that are looking to exploit concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Certain financial scams are seeing fraudsters posing as the CDC Health Alert Network to steal personal information.

(Update March 30: There is another scam currently circulating in which fraudsters are calling individuals asking for bank account information to deposit pending stimulus checks.  Know that the IRS WILL NOT call you and ask for your personal information in order to deposit these checks.)

Beware the Following:

·         Text messages or phone calls that appear to be from your financial institution, asking for personal and online banking information.

·         Fraudulent e-mails claiming to be the Centers for Disease Control or the World Health Organization, directing you to harmful websites that load malware and other harmful applications.

·         Phony online Coronavirus Maps, built to be similar in appearance to maps like the one created by The Johns Hopkins University. One such map is corona-virus-map.com. These fraudulent maps contain software that steals usernames, passwords, credit card information and other data from your browser.

Protect Yourselves in the Following Ways:

·         Use only reliable sources when searching for information about COVID-19

·         Never click on unknown attachments and links

·         Beware phishing e-mails

·         Be cautious of e-mails and phone calls offering unexpected information and asking for personal information.

Compass Federal Credit Union will not contact you and ask for you to provide or verify personal information such as: account usernames, passwords, online banking information or full social security numbers.
